Training Details

  • Meeting or exceeding all requirements set forth by the State of Michigan and the U.S. Department of Transportation, the training spans 194 instructional hours, combining formal classroom instruction, online learning, and 32 hours of hands-on clinical experience on an Advanced Life Support (ALS) transporting ambulance. The curriculum utilizes advanced digital platforms (including JB Learning, EMS Testing, and Platinum Planner) to deliver coursework and evaluate students.
  • Upon successful completion of all didactic, practical, and affective requirements, students earn an official course completion certificate, making them fully eligible to sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) cognitive certification exam and pursue state licensure.
  • EMT training is offered in partnership with Clare-Gladwin CTE and MyMichigan Health.

By the completion of this course, students will be able to

  • Perform Patient Assessments
    • Demonstrate an accurate and thorough emergency medical assessment on both medical and trauma patients.
  • Formulate & Implement Care
    • Formulate appropriate emergency medical care plans based on objective assessment findings and competently execute those life-saving skills.
  • Practice Safe Body Mechanics
    • Utilize proper techniques to lift, move, and position patients in a manner that prevents injury to both the patient and the EMS provider.
  • Fulfill Professional Expectations
    • Meet all professional expectations and functional standards outlined in the standard EMT job description.
  • Demonstrate Multi-Domain Competency
    • Prove entry-level competency across the three core educational domains
      • Cognitive | Maintain a minimum 80% average on JB Learning and 70% on EMS Testing, and pass a comprehensive final written exam.

      • Psychomotor | Successfully master all tasks in the State of Michigan BLS Psychomotor Portfolio and pass a final 3-scenario practical exam (covering adult medical, adult trauma, and pediatric care).

      • Affective | Demonstrate critical workplace behaviors, including integrity, empathy, self-motivation, teamwork, diplomacy, and strict patient confidentiality.

  • Achieve Certification Eligibility

    • Meet all course, clinical, and state criteria to qualify for the National Registry (NREMT) credentialing process.

Successful completion of the training awards a certificate that qualifies students to apply for the Emergency Medical Technician cognitive examination administered by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT).

Scheduling the exam and its cost are the student’s responsibility. Upon successful completion of the National Registry examination, graduates may apply for EMT licensure with the State of Michigan.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Acceptable criminal background history.
  • Demonstrate basic arithmetic and applied math skills necessary for safe patient care, including calculating medication dosages, interpreting vital signs, and solving scenario-based problems.
  • Demonstrate proficiency consistent with National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) standards, including the cognitive ability to process medical information, interpret scenarios, and perform calculations relevant to emergency medical care.
  • Reading proficiency at or above an 8th-grade level as measured by the Flesch-Kincaid scale.
  • Laptop or equivalent device (iPad/tablet) for online coursework.
  • Obtain a 10-panel non-DOT drug screen with negative results.
