This 120-hour program provides entry-level skills in safety practices, blueprint reading and welding symbols, and basic MIG welding. This training includes a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on practical experience.
Students will be introduced to the hazards and safe work practices involved in welding and cutting to prevent injury and/or illness. Topics include personal protective equipment (PPE), lock out tag out (LOTO), and the safe handling of compressed gases.
This understanding and interpretation of a variety of base welding and fabrication blueprints utilized in manufacturing is key to a welder's success. Students will gain the skills and knowledge to interpret basic welding symbols, welding requirements and NDT symbols.
Students will learn the parts of GMAW outfits and the supplies needed for them. These outfits consist of shielding gas, gas flow, wire feeder, and the welding gun. Students will also learn the welding principles and technical terms that are used in welding for the specific type of weld and metal used.
Students will learn how to assemble and adjust a GMAW outfit properly, primarily using the welding machine in which all the cables, hoses, shielding gas supply, and the welding torch are connected.
Students will learn the five basic welding joints (butt, lap, corner, T- and edge) and the four positions used to weld them. Welding positions are based on two principles: welding axis and welding face. Positions included in the training include flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead.
Students will learn the several types of visible welding defects and the proper ways to correct them.
Students will learn what a fillet weld is and the various ways a fillet weld is implemented.
