Rust Shaker Mountain Bike Race Returns
The sound of tires on singletrack and the rush of early-season racing energy soon return to the trails at Mid Michigan College as riders from across the region gather for the annual Rust Shaker Mountain Bike Race.
The race is taking place Saturday, April 18, with registration available online ahead of the event and in person the day of the race.
Set among the wooded terrain surrounding the Poet Family Outdoor Education Center on the College’s Harrison Campus, Rust Shaker has become a favorite spring tradition for Michigan’s mountain biking community. Each year, cyclists shake off the winter rust and kick off the racing season on Mid’s fast-flowing trail system—known for its singletrack, rolling climbs, and technical sections that challenge riders while keeping the course fun and approachable.
Riders of all experience levels are invited to participate, with race divisions ranging from beginner and sport to elite competitors. Whether racing for the podium or simply pushing personal limits, participants can expect a course that rewards endurance, skill, and determination.
But Rust Shaker is about more than the race itself.
The event brings together cyclists, outdoor enthusiasts, students, and community members for a shared celebration of recreation and connection in the outdoors. The trail system, which serves both the College and the public year-round, provides opportunities for biking, hiking, and outdoor learning—making events like Rust Shaker an important way to showcase and support the region’s growing outdoor recreation culture.
Race day begins with rider check-in and gathering at the Poet Family Outdoor Education Center before competitors head to the starting line. After the final riders cross the finish, the celebration continues with awards, camaraderie, and plenty of trail stories shared among friends old and new.
Whether you're an experienced racer, a weekend trail rider, or simply someone who enjoys the energy of outdoor events, Rust Shaker promises an exciting day in the woods and a memorable start to the season.
