Mid Student Project Helps Community Members Give Clothes a Second Life

A loose button or small tear doesn’t have to mean the end of a favorite shirt. On Thursday, October 29, Mid Michigan College hosts Sew You Care: Basic Clothing Repair for Everyone, a hands-on workshop that helps community members extend the life of their clothing, save money, and reduce waste.

The free workshop takes place from 8am to 1pm in the Community Room on Mid Michigan College’s Mt. Pleasant Campus. Participants will learn basic sewing and clothing repair skills they can use at home. Sewing kits are also available to take home while supplies last.

The event is a student-led project through the College’s Honors Program that brings together practical skills and environmental awareness to address the impact of fast fashion and clothing waste.

Fast fashion encourages the rapid production and purchase of inexpensive clothing, contributing to textile waste and other environmental concerns. Learning to make simple repairs can help people keep their clothes wearable longer, reduce the need to replace items, and make the most of what they already own.

Whether participants want to save money, make more sustainable choices, or simply keep their favorite clothes in rotation, Sew You Care offers an approachable place to start. No advanced sewing experience is needed.
