Guests attending this year’s A Northern Tradition take home more than memories of an evening Up North—they’ll also receive a unique piece of local artwork inspired by Michigan’s natural beauty.
Each ticket holder at the 23rd annual event receives a commemorative print created by Michigan artist Julie Tyslicky. The detailed colored pencil piece highlights the rich colors, textures, and patterns found in the stones that shape Michigan’s rivers, forests, and shorelines.
In the artwork, a vibrant collection of stones forms a colorful foundation while others appear suspended above it, creating a dynamic composition that celebrates the intricate layers and natural history found within even the smallest pieces of the landscape. The piece reflects both the quiet beauty and the powerful forces of time that shape the natural world.
Tyslicky draws inspiration from rocks she has collected over the years, fascinated by their patterns, colors, and the sense of history they hold.
“Each rock seems to be its own abstract collaboration,” Tyslicky said. “The colors and layers are amazing and a challenge to reproduce in colored pencil.”
A longtime Michigan artist and instructor, Tyslicky has taught drawing and colored pencil for more than 30 years and regularly exhibits in juried shows throughout the state, earning numerous awards and recognition for her detailed work.
The commemorative print is included with every ticket to A Northern Tradition, the annual fundraiser supporting students at Mid Michigan College through scholarships, campus initiatives, and improved learning spaces. Held at Jay’s Sporting Goods in Clare, the event captures the spirit of an Up North evening with food tastings from local restaurants, live outdoor demonstrations, a silent auction, and exclusive after-hours access to the store. Together, over the past 23 years, our community has raised more than $2 million to support Mid students, a powerful testament to the generosity of local businesses and residents.
Tickets are $50 and include the commemorative print, a $35 gift certificate to Jay’s Sporting Goods, and entry into a drawing for a $1,000 Jay’s Sporting Goods gift certificate.
