Mid Michigan College Announces New Women’s Basketball and Men’s Bowling Head Coaches

Mid Michigan College is excited to announce two new auditions to its Laker Athletics coaching staff. Tanner Smith has been named Head Coach of Women’s Basketball, and Ruberto Mosqueda will serve as Head Coach of Men’s Bowling.

Women’s Basketball– Tanner Smith

Tanner Smith has been part of the Laker Women’s Basketball program since 2022, serving as the Lead Assistant Coach during a period of great success. During his tenure, he helped guide the Lakers to a program-record number of wins in a single season and an overall record of 89-14.

Smith also brings extensive coaching experience from outside of Mid. Since 2019, he has served as the Varsity Girls Basketball Head Coach at Sanford Meridian High School, where he oversaw an impressive streak of 59 consecutive conference wins and an overall record of 92-41. In addition, he has coached with the AAU Real Basketball program at the 17U level, building competitive teams and mentoring young athletes.

“With a decade of coaching experiences across junior college, high school, and AAU programs–and a proven record of building championship-caliber teams, I am ready to take on a bigger challenge and commit to one team,” said Smith. “I’m eager to contribute to the culture, competitiveness, and continued success of Mid Michigan College Women’s Basketball.”

Mid Michigan College Athletic Director Danny Smith added, “We are excited to have Tanner step into the head coaching role. His proven track record at the high school and AAU levels, along with his previous years as an assistant coach here at Mid, will no doubt make this a seamless transition.”

Men’s Bowling– Ruberto Mosqueda

Ruberto Mosqueda, a former student-athlete at Mid, has been selected to lead the Laker Men’s Bowling program. Mosqueda brings both competitive experience and a passion for player development to his new role.

As a Laker bowler, Mosqueda was named to the MCCAA Eastern Conference All-Conference Team (2024), the MCCAA Eastern Conference All-Freshman Team (2024), and earned the title of MCCAA Eastern Conference Freshman Bowler of the Year in 2024. He has also gained coaching experience working with youth bowlers, where he demonstrated a strong ability to develop both skills and leadership in young athletes.

“Ruberto had a strong bowling career at Mid and performed beyond his years in both relationship building and knowledge of the sport,” said Athletic Director Danny Smith. “There is little doubt he will continue to succeed as our new head coach.”

Mid Michigan College competes in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) against other community colleges for division, conference, regional/district, and state championships. The Lakers also compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) for national tournaments. Mid currently fields teams in the following sports–men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s bowling, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s cross country, and co-ed clay target shooting.
