Mid Michigan College Mourns the Loss of Former President and Longtime Employee
The Mid Michigan College community is mourning the loss of two members of its College family, former President Dr. Christine Hammond and Tammy Alvaro, a longtime College employee and dedicated student advocate. Both passed away this weekend following battles with cancer.

Dr. Hammond served as President of Mid Michigan College, providing leadership and guiding the institution’s work to serve students and strengthen global connections. Her contributions to the College and the people it serves remain part of Mid’s history.

Alvaro dedicated her career to supporting students and strengthening campus life. In her work with student life and Phi Theta Kappa, Mid’s chapter of the international honor society for two-year colleges, she helped students recognize their achievements, develop leadership skills, and find opportunities to make a difference. Her commitment to students and their success was reflected in the many ways she supported their growth and involvement in the College community.
“The loss of Chris and Tammy is deeply felt throughout the Mid Michigan College community,” said Scott Mertes, Mid Michigan College President. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives they touched. We are grateful for their contributions to Mid and will remember the lasting impact they made on our College and the people we serve.”
Mid Michigan College extends its deepest sympathies to the families, friends, and loved ones of both Christine Hammond and Tammy Alvaro during this difficult time.
