Mid Michigan College Names Danny Smith Athletic Director

Mid Michigan College is proud to announce the appointment of Danny Smith as the College’s new Athletic Director. Smith will continue to serve as the College’s Head Baseball Coach, a role he has held since January 2025, while stepping into this leadership position.

Coach Smith brings more than 30 years of coaching experience across both high school and collegiate baseball, along with a distinguished record of athletic program development and student-athlete success.

His collegiate coaching career began in 2008 as an assistant coach at Saginaw Valley State University. In 2011, he was named Head Baseball Coach at Delta College, a fellow member of the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA). During his nine-year tenure at Delta, Smith amassed an impressive 239-117 overall record. He helped 84 student-athletes advance to four-year institutions, guided four teams to Academic All-American honors with team GPAs of 3.0 or higher, and played a central role in the design and construction of a $1.2 million on-campus baseball facility.

Smith’s coaching foundation was built in high school athletics, including head coaching duties at St. Louis High School from 2001 to 2008, and assistant roles at Breckenridge, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep, and Alma High School.

Since joining Mid Michigan College, Smith has already made a significant impact. In his first season as Head Baseball Coach, he led the Lakers to a 27-17 overall record and a 17-8 mark in MCCAA Northern Conference play, culminating in a berth in the NJCAA Region XII Division 2 Tournament.

Outside of athletics, Smith has professional experience in business and technology, having served as a Program Manager in IT Business Enablement at Koch Industries.

“Danny’s leadership experience in both the corporate and athletic arenas uniquely positions him to lead Mid’s Laker Athletics into the future,” said Matt Miller, Vice President of Student Services & Advancement.

Smith holds a bachelor’s degree from Olivet College (1997) and a master’s degree in administration from Central Michigan University (2017). He resides in Midland with his wife, Mindy, and their three children.

“I’m excited for the future of Laker Athletics and look forward to the continued growth and success of our student-athletes,” shared Smith.

Mid Michigan College competes in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) against other community colleges for division, conference, regional/district, and state championships. The Lakers also compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) for national tournaments.

Mid currently fields teams in the following sports—men's and women’s basketball, men's and women’s bowling, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s cross country, and co-ed clay target shooting.
