Mid Michigan College Baseball & Softball Student-Athletes Recognized for Excellence

Mid Michigan College’s Baseball and Softball teams recently wrapped up outstanding 2024-2025 seasons with postseason appearances.

Recently, individual National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) awards were announced.

Baseball

  • Jack Nilson (Macomb) was named to the All-MCCAA and MCCAA Northern Conference First Teams.
  • Jack Nilson (Macomb) and David Wheeler (Haslett) were named to the MCCAA Northern Conference All-Freshman Team.
  • Justin Esch (Pigeon) and David Wheeler (Haslett) were named to the MCCAA Northern Conference Second Team.
  • Donovan Heugh (Macomb) and Eddie McDonald (Holt) received MCCAA Honorable Mention recognition.

“These individual honors serve as a testament to the hard work and commitment the entire Laker team put in during the 2025 season,” said Danny Smith, Baseball Head Coach. “Being recognized as the best of the few is only accomplished with the help of the many.”

The Laker baseball team finished with an overall record of 27-17 while going 17-8 in conference play, earning second place in the Northern division. They qualified for the postseason for a fourth consecutive year, losing in the best-of-three regional tournament two games to one and ending Cuyahoga College’s nation-leading 41-consecutive game winning streak.

Softball

  • Alexis Mielke (Standish) was named an NJCAA Division II First Team All-American, becoming the first player in Laker history to receive such an honor in softball.
  • Zoey Bacon (Stanton) and Alexis Mielke (Standish) were named to the NJCAA Region XII Division II All-Region Team, All-MCCAA Team, and to the MCCAA Northern Conference First Team.
  • Adria Reed (Alma), Gabi Johnston (Stanton), and Phoenix Shaw (St. Louis) were named to the MCCAA Northern Conference Second Team.
  • Emmah Hanson (Midland) received MCCAA Honorable Mention recognition.

“We’re all so proud of the season these student-athletes put together,” shared Head Coach Greg Welch. “Their drive, dedication, and hard work were an inspiration to the team throughout the season.”

The Laker softball team finished with a record of 26-24 overall and 18-7 in conference play, earning second place in the Northern division. Their season ended after reaching the championship game of the Great Lakes District A tournament.

Mid Michigan College competes in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) against other community colleges for division, conference, regional/district, and state championships. The Lakers also compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) for national tournaments.

Mid currently fields teams in the following sports—men's and women’s basketball, men's and women’s bowling, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s cross country, and co-ed clay target shooting.
