The 22nd annual A Northern Tradition, a fundraiser for Mid Michigan College sponsored by Jay’s Sporting Goods, will take place 5pm-8pm Sunday, April 13 in Clare. Over the past 20 years, this cherished event has raised more than $1.7 million to benefit students at Mid Michigan College.
“One of the unique features of this event is the featured artist,” explained Alexa Carey, Executive Director of the Mid Michigan College Foundation. “We often select someone with a connection to the area and to nature, and this year, Cheryl Meyer receives the honor!”
Cheryl Meyer grew up near the Saginaw Bay and spent her childhood exploring different natural areas to observe local wildlife, especially birds and snakes.
"Nature and a family that embraced creativity raised me,” shared Meyer.
Meyer studied fine arts and creative writing at Central Michigan University and has long practiced writing and painting throughout her life. She has recently become a watercolor and creative writing instructor for Art Reach in Mt. Pleasant and continues as an Adjunct Art Instructor at both Mid Michigan College and Montcalm Community College.
For A Northern Tradition, Meyer brings the spirit of Great Blue Herons to life in a watercolor print ticket holders will get to take home and enjoy.
"I live on a small lake and have the opportunity to watch herons and egrets often, and this year, the Great Blue Herons were especially active along the shore hunting and even showing up on my game camera! This served as my inspiration for "Great Blue", I hope you enjoy it!"
Funds raised through the A Northern Tradition event support the College’s programs, facilities, and student services, helping to equip students with the skills and training needed for success in the workforce and as they pursue advanced degrees.
“We’re grateful for the ongoing support from our community,” said Carey. “A Northern Tradition has become one of the year’s most anticipated events, thanks to local businesses and residents who believe in investing in education and the future of our region. This year, we are especially thankful to Cheryl for partnering with us and sharing her art with all of you.”
Tickets are $50 each and include a $35 gift certificate to Jay’s Sporting Goods. Attendees will also receive a commemorative outdoor-themed print by Featured Artist Cheryl Meyer.
