Mid Michigan College recently welcomed Danny Smith to serve as the Baseball Head Coach for Laker Athletics.
“I’m excited to welcome Danny to Mid,” shared Greg Mallek, Athletic Director at Mid. “He joins a team dedicated to supporting our student-athletes and we’re all looking forward to the future success of Mid’s baseball team.”
A veteran coach with 29 years of experience, Smith joins Mid from Breckenridge High School, where he served as varsity assistant coach since 2022. With the Huskies, Smith helped lead the team to a Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) District Title in 2022.
Before coaching at Breckenridge, Smith was the St. Louis High School Head Coach, compiling a 174-75 record and winning four league titles and one district title. Smith also had assistant coaching stops at Edmore Montabella, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep, and Alma High School.
Smith has extensive experience in the college ranks, serving as an Assistant Coach at Saginaw Valley State University from 2008-2011, and as the Head Coach at fellow Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) member Delta College from 2011-2020.
“Smith’s record of success, both on the field and in supporting the education of his student-athletes, is exceptional,” shared Mallek.
During his time at Delta, Smith led the Pioneers to a 239-177 overall record in nine seasons. Delta qualified for postseason play seven straight seasons and won two National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XII Championships (2017, 2019). During the 2017 season, Smith led the Pioneers to a Super Regional victory and an appearance in the NJCAA College World Series, where they finished fifth.
A three-time Region XII Coach of the Year while at Delta, Smith saw 84 players go on to play at four-year colleges or universities and four of his teams were selected as Academic All-Americans after posting a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
“I’m excited to begin leading Laker Baseball and am looking forward to building positive relationships with our players and parents,” said Smith.
Smith and the Lakers begin their season in March.
