Mid Michigan College’s Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society Chapter is bringing awareness to the impact of domestic violence with events October 17.
Everyone on campus is encouraged to wear purple on Thursday, October 17 in honor of National Wear Purple Day and as a symbol of peace, courage, survival, honor, and personal dedication to domestic violence awareness. National Wear Purple Day is a national day of action each October during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Later that day, from 5pm – 7pm Thursday, October 17 on Mid’s Mt. Pleasant Campus in the Community Room, Mid’s PTK Chapter is hosting Why We Tell Stories: Domestic Violence, the change is in our hands. The event features Keynote Speaker Brandi Pols, the mother of Rowan Morey, who will share her story and what she is doing to initiate changes to protect children from domestic violence, even if they are with a custodial parent. Her initiative, currently known as Rowan's Alert, will hopefully soon be known as Rowan's Law.
Attendees will also hear from local service organizations, including RISE Advocacy, Behavioral Health for Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, and Mid Michigan College on how we can all be a part of positive change when it comes to domestic violence and the services they have to assist victims.
Refreshments will be served.
“The students have worked very hard to put this event together,” said Tammy Alvaro, Mid Michigan College Director of Student Advancement and PTK Chapter Advisor. “We hope to see many community members, educators, and students attend in a show of support for the survivors of domestic violence, the organizations that support them, and in memory of those who have been lost.”
