Hunter Returns to Mid with New Hope
“I wanted to do more, be more, and show my children that anything is possible.”
For Hunter Burlett, returning to Mid Michigan College wasn’t just about earning a degree– it was about rewriting a story. A decade ago, Hunter was enrolled at Mid, but the unexpected loss of a loved one changed everything. “My daughter’s father, my ex-husband, took his life. It left me in a deep depression, and I had to step away from school to focus on my child.”
Now, years later, Hunter has returned stronger, more determined, and more hopeful than ever. Working full-time, raising a 13-year-old son, and studying alongside a supportive wife who’s also a Mid student, Hunter has found a rhythm and a purpose. Sticky notes around the desk serve as daily reminders of lessons and dreams, while shared study sessions and family encouragement fuel the journey forward.
“I’m part of the LGBTQIA+ community, representing the T. I joined the Human Rights Committee of Isabella County because everyone deserves rights,” Hunter shared. “I want to help others have the rights that those before me fought so hard for.”
Hunter is currently pursuing an associate degree in Administrative Assistant with a focus on Paralegal, with plans to transfer to Central Michigan University to major in Political Science– and that is just the beginning. “I’d like to run for governor someday. But first, I want to be properly equipped to serve, to understand the process, and to advocate for my community with integrity.”
What brought Hunter back to Mid was more than proximity– it was the people. “Instructors here care. They don’t make you feel like you’re just another number. They talk to you, support you, and remember you– and that makes a difference.”
Hunter is also a proud officer of Phi Theta Kappa, an honor that reflects hard work, resilience, and the academic support found at Mid. “This has been the best experience so far. I’m more motivated than ever to keep moving forward and make my mark on the world.”
To anyone questioning whether it’s too late to return to school, Hunter offers, “Do it. You never know what will happen unless you try.”
Whether it’s rewriting your story or preparing for the next chapter, Mid Moves You.
