If I Can Help Even One Person” — How Caitlin Emry Found Purpose Through Pain, and Power Through Education

Student Caitlyn Emry

Caitlin Emry’s journey is one of incredible resilience, perseverance, and the determination to make a difference—not only in her own life but in the lives of others. Originally from northern Michigan, Caitlin’s childhood was filled with frequent moves and difficult circumstances. Yet, despite the challenges she faced growing up—including a turbulent home life and struggles with her mental health—Caitlin always dreamed of attending Mid Michigan College after high school.

However, life had other plans for Caitlin. The day of her high school graduation, Caitlin discovered she was pregnant, and she soon became a single mother, working as a Medical Assistant to support her son. She met her future husband, and together they had a second child. As both of her children were diagnosed with autism, Caitlin focused all her energy on securing the best therapy and support for them.

Although Caitlin’s journey took a different path than she originally envisioned, she never gave up on her dream of attending college. Now, Caitlin is pursuing a degree in social work at Mid Michigan College, determined to help others in the same way social workers have helped her throughout her life. “I plan to find a job as a social worker and start making a difference in other people's lives, just like the social workers who have been fighting for me my whole life,” she said.

The support Caitlin has received at Mid has made all the difference in her ability to balance her family life with her academic pursuits. The flexible online learning options available at Mid have allowed Caitlin to stay fully present for her children while continuing her education. “I like the fact that I can do a lot of my coursework online so that I am still able to be there for my kids,” Caitlin said.

Caitlin’s dedication to her studies, her family, and her future career does not go unnoticed. Despite the challenges she has faced– such as managing her mental health and epilepsy, Caitlin remains focused on her goals. “With each credit, I am one step closer to reaching my goals,” she said, reflecting on her progress at Mid.

In addition to her studies, Caitlin is passionate about removing the stigma surrounding mental health. She hopes to inspire others who may feel like giving up due to mental health struggles, or those who may feel guilty about pursuing their own dreams while raising children with special needs. “If I can help even one person realize they can still believe in themselves, then it’s worth it,” Caitlin said.

Caitlin’s path to Mid Michigan College wasn’t the one she originally planned, but it has been the right one for her. “I would absolutely recommend community college to anyone interested,” Caitlin said. “The smaller campus size has kept me from getting overwhelmed, and the financial aid goes further here, which is important for me. The instructors are great at answering questions, and they’ve been incredibly understanding of my needs.”

Caitlin is a testament to the power of second chances and the support that Mid Michigan College offers its students. She looks forward to continuing her education, transferring to a university, and eventually working as a social worker. “I want to be the best mother and wife I can be, and I believe having a job I’m passionate about, while supporting my family, is the perfect choice for me.”

Caitlin’s story shows that no matter what life throws your way, Mid Michigan College is here to help you move forward. Whether it’s pursuing a career change, overcoming personal challenges, or chasing your dreams, Mid Moves You
