Mid Michigan College’s Global Projects & Studies team, is hosting the second annual Conference on the Middle East & Mediterranean Region November 11 – November 13.
“We’re excited to bring the conference back for its second year,” noted Iliana Miller, Communication Faculty at Mid. “The event is approaching quickly and we’re excited to offer excellent presenters, the Stamps of Hope exhibit featuring art by Syrian refugees, a taste of Middle Eastern cuisine, music, and more.”
The conference is scheduled for Monday, November 11 through Wednesday, November 13 on Mid’s Mt. Pleasant Campus and is free and open to the public. The conference will feature keynote addresses from Professor Mark Tessler, an expert on the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict; Eastern philosophy poetry reading by James VanderMey; viola performance by Dr. Alicia Valoti, Viola Associate Professor at Central Michigan University; and more.
“We encourage everyone to attend the conference as we explore the concepts of conflict, security, and peacemaking, and seek to reduce misconceptions about the region, encourage understanding of complex public issues, and develop insights into cultural traditions,” said Miller.
Mid Michigan College’s Global Projects & Studies team, an inter-disciplinary group comprised of faculty and administrators, was awarded a $10,000 grant in 2023 from the Midwest Institute for International-Intercultural Education co-sponsored by the University of Michigan’s Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies and the University of Illinois’ Center for South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies.
“We are excited to continue our work expanding the horizons of Mid students through this grant,” shared Miller.
Grant funds support the curricular infusion of Middle Eastern voices, perspectives, approaches, concepts, research methods, and research questions from the region.
