Earlier this fall, Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) honor students from chapters at community colleges across Michigan met at the Leelanau Outdoor Center in Maple City for the Michigan Region Phi Theta Kappa Fall Leadership Conference.
“The conference provides students with the chance to gather for fellowship and educational opportunities,” shared Tammy Alvaro, Director of Student Life and PTK Chapter Advisor at Mid.
Mid Michigan College was represented by Kinleigh Keller (Lake Isabella), Laura Nicholson (Mt. Pleasant), Logan Romatz (Clare), and Sophia Lewis (Mt. Pleasant)—all of whom serve as PTK Chapter Officers at Mid.
“This weekend was an amazing opportunity to embrace my academic and leadership journey. I was able to meet, engage, and collaborate with new friends and grow stronger bonds with old friends. The memories and friendships I made over this weekend will last a lifetime,” shared Nicholson.
Students participated in PTK’s Leadership Development Series Lesson 1: Leadership Lessons from the Great Lakes, as well as many other activities to enrich their communication, presentation, and leadership skills.
“My experience at the 2023 PTK convention was very educational,” noted Lewis.
This year's conference was focused on Embracing Your Future. Students learned how using their previous experiences can help shape their future, and were able to play human foosball, archery tag, fly an airplane simulator, and participate in a glow-in-the-dark hike to Pyramid Point overlooking Lake Michigan.
“This weekend allowed me to learn more about what being in PTK and being a chapter officer is all about. I was able to branch out and get to know students at other schools, which allowed me to grow my support system,” said Keller.
