Resilience & Growth Lead to Success

Liv Lumbert

Liv Lumbert is a dedicated student at Mid Michigan College who has not only overcome personal challenges but has also found a path toward a bright future. Liv recently graduated with an Associate Degree in Business Management, and her journey to success is a testament to the power of perseverance, self-discovery, and the supportive community at Mid.

“When I first started my college journey, I didn’t want to go to a community college. I was set on fast-tracking my degree at a large university, but after everything I’ve been through, I can confidently say that if you’re considering community college at all, just do it. It’s more cost-efficient, you get two degrees instead of one, and you get so much support that universities just can’t offer.”

Liv’s story begins in Clare, Michigan, where she faced the challenges of growing up in a single-parent household. As a first-generation college student, she was no stranger to adversity. But even before coming to Mid, she knew she had a passion for business and a drive to succeed.

Liv graduated at the top of her class from Clare’s alternative education high school in 2020, a year that was marked by the global pandemic. Despite the hardships she faced—including a personal traumatic experience that led her to transfer schools, and an autonomic nervous system dysfunction diagnosis—she was determined to pursue her college dreams.

Liv’s first college experience at a large university was a tough one. Despite being accepted, she quickly realized that large classes, a lack of support, and the challenges of adjusting to adulthood on her own made it hard to succeed.

“My university experience was tough. I didn’t feel supported, and after a few months, I knew it wasn't for me.”

But Liv didn’t give up. In January 2021, she made the decision to return to Mid Michigan College, where she had first learned about the college through a dual-enrollment program in high school. “Coming back to Mid felt right, I knew it was a place where I would be welcomed with open arms and support,” she said.

Her first attempt back at Mid wasn’t without its challenges. Juggling a new job with online courses, Liv found herself struggling once again. But instead of giving up, she decided to scale back and by the spring of 2022, Liv was ready to give it her all.

“I started with just six credits that semester and ended up getting my first ever 4.0 GPA. It was a turning point for me. I realized I could do this if I just focused on taking it slow and really committed to my education.”

Liv’s success didn’t stop there. With the help of Mid’s caring faculty and staff, she went on to finish the winter semester of 2023 with another 4.0 GPA, and graduated with a 3.6 GPA. The support she’s received has been instrumental in helping her turn her academic life around and achieve her goals.

“The mentors and instructors at Mid are incredible. They genuinely care about your success and go out of their way to support you. If something seems wrong, they don’t hesitate to check on you. They want you to succeed.”

Liv also noted that Mid offers a great amount of support to students with both physical and
learning disabilities. “I struggled a lot after my diagnosis, thinking that I wouldn’t
have enough energy to go to college and continue to work at the same time, but the support I
received from Mid allowed me to continue my education.”

Through the highs and lows, Liv has found that Mid Michigan College isn’t just a place to earn a degree—it’s a supportive community that cares for its students. “Mid is more than just a college for many of us. It’s a second home, a place of love and support, and a place where we know we belong.”

As Liv prepares to graduate and transition into the next chapter of her life, she’s setting her sights on a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resource Management. She plans to find a good job and transfer to a university to continue her education.

“I’m really excited for my future now. I’m not just leaving with a degree, but with the knowledge and confidence that I can overcome anything. I’ve faced so much, from relationship issues to financial struggles, and I know I wouldn’t have made it this far without the support I’ve had from Mid.”

Liv’s journey is proof that no matter where you start or what obstacles you face, with determination and the right support, you can reach your goals. And at Mid Michigan College, that support is always available. From financial aid assistance to personal mentoring and a nurturing academic environment, Mid is committed to helping students succeed—just like Liv.

“The trajectory of my future has forever been altered because of the support I’ve received at Mid. I’ll forever be grateful for everything they’ve done for me,” Liv said.

Liv’s story is an inspiring reminder that Mid offers more than just a path to a degree—they provide a safe space to grow, learn, and overcome obstacles. Whether you’re just starting out or coming back after a setback, Mid Michigan College is a place where you can make your dreams a reality.
