At Mid Michigan College, we believe every student’s story is unique. Sierra Sterling’s journey as a teen mother exemplifies resilience, determination, and the life-changing opportunities that education can offer.
Sierra’s path to success was far from easy, but it has been shaped by her inner strength and unwavering commitment to her family. Raised in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, Sierra faced significant challenges from an early age. She spent part of her childhood in foster care, and at just 16, she became a mother. Over the years, she had three more children, including two sons with autism and a son born with congenital heart disease. These experiences taught her resilience, compassion, and the power of perseverance.
Despite these challenges, Sierra’s ambition to further her education remained steadfast. After completing training in medical assisting and phlebotomy, her dream of certification was put on hold when her former college shut down just weeks before her graduation. Rather than giving up, Sierra found a second chance at Mid Michigan College where she could find the support and flexibility needed to succeed.
“Mid has changed my life,” Sierra shared. “It opened doors I never thought I could walk through. The supportive environment and flexibility have been life-changing, especially while balancing family responsibilities with school.”
Sierra is currently pursuing an Associate Degree in Administrative Assistant Professional– Medical Office. She chose this path because it aligned with her passion for healthcare and her desire to make a positive impact in her community. At Mid, Sierra has found instructors who care deeply about her success, offering the encouragement and guidance necessary to thrive in her program.
“Thanks to my education here, I’m now a medical receptionist,” she said. “This role not only allows me to help others, but it also provides for my family. It’s fulfilling to know that I’m making a difference– not only in my community but also in my own life.”

As she prepares to graduate with her daughter by her side– just as she did at her high school graduation– Sierra is excited to continue growing in her career and inspiring her children to chase their own dreams.
