“I’ve always known animals were my calling,” said Anna Drews, whose journey to higher education has been defined by resilience, determination, and a deep passion for wildlife. Currently completing her prerequisites at Mid Michigan College, Anna plans to transfer to pursue a degree in Animal Medicine, with aspirations of working in the national parks to rehabilitate and document wildlife.

Anna’s story begins long before the classroom. “I got kicked out of my house at 18,” she said. “It was my senior year of high school, and I had no idea what would happen next.” Without stability, she faced fear and uncertainty until her partner’s aunt, Jackie, opened her home and heart. “Jackie became my mom in every way that matters. Now we share a home full of animals, love, and support.”

Even in the face of hardship, Anna’s commitment to her passion never wavered. She worked several animal-related jobs after high school and gained valuable experience before returning to education, thanks to Mid Michigan College’s flexible scheduling, affordable tuition, and supportive instructors. Instructors like Jackie Justice and Jessica Chemberlin guided her academically and personally, providing encouragement and mentorship that made her feel seen and understood in ways she had never experienced before.

Mid Michigan College has also given Anna opportunities that she never imagined. Through her BIO.299 course, she traveled to Costa Rica, gaining hands-on experience in wildlife study and conservation. “That trip was life-changing. I got to see wildlife rehabilitation and research up close. Mid made it possible for me to have an experience I never thought I could,” she said.

Anna also values the supportive community she has found at Mid. “Everyone I’ve met at Mid has treated me like a future professional. Mid is a home for collaboration and encouragement. I have never felt more welcomed and celebrated,” she said.

Her journey is a testament to perseverance, second chances, and following your passion. “It’s never too late to start. People come from all walks of life, and your past does not have to define your future,” Anna said.

Through Mid Michigan College, Anna has discovered the support, flexibility, and hands-on experiences necessary to pursue her dream career in animal medicine. Whether you are exploring a new path or building on your goals, Mid Moves You.
