Mid Trustee Metzger Recognized

At Mid Michigan College’s December Board of Trustees meeting, retiring Trustee Tom Metzger was recognized for his service to the College.

Tom Metzger receives award from Mid President Tim Hood.

Metzger represented the Beaverton area and was elected to the Board in 1992. He is retired from General Motors, where he held the position of Journeyman in Machine Repair for 38 years. Metzger also holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Central Michigan University. He plans to continue his collegiate teaching career and will remain a valued supporter and partner of Mid.

Tom Metzger’s father, Clarence Metzger, served as a Trustee for Mid Michigan College for many years before relinquishing his seat, which his son was then elected to and held for the next 32 years. Metzger served the Board in the capacities of Board Treasurer, member of the Audit Committee, Board Facilities Committee, and Senior Citizen Travel Club Advisory Committee and received years of service recognition from both the College and the Michigan Community College Association.

The December meeting was Metzger’s last, as he decided to not run for re-election earlier this year.

“Tom has served on Mid’s Board of Trustees for many years and he will be greatly missed,” noted Tim Hood, Mid Michigan College President. “All of us at the College are grateful to Tom for his 32 years of dedication to education and the students we serve.”

Metzger’s seat will now be filled by Karen Moore, who was elected in November and will begin service in 2025. Moore is a resident of Beaverton and a dedicated community leader with an extensive academic background, having earned a Ph.D. in Management alongside a law degree. Her commitment to public service has led her to serve as a Gladwin County Commissioner and be involved in various community initiatives such as 211, Gladwin County Community Foundation, Rotary, Kiwanis, and President of Gladwin County Leadership.

“The College is lucky to have such a dedicated group of trustees,” said Hood. “Their experience, guidance, and service to Mid cannot be overstated.”

Mid Michigan College is governed by seven publicly elected members of its Board of Trustees.  These residents of Clare County, Gladwin County, and the Mt. Pleasant School District, the College’s in-district service areas, ensure that Mid achieves its mission to develop knowledge and ability to empower learners and transform communities by providing exceptional, affordable, and open access to post-secondary education in the mid-Michigan region.
