Mid Michigan College’s student-led Laker Fishing Club recently had two members travel to Traverse City to compete in the Michigan Bass Nation College State Championship on Grand Traverse Bay.
Jaden Bovee (Coleman) and Nick Poet (Clare) represented Mid at the event and caught five fish totaling 16.49 pounds. Bovee and Poet share more than fishing club membership, both are Hunting & Angling Expedition Scholars and are pursuing Outdoor Industry Entrepreneurship degrees at Mid.
Bovee and Poet placed 11th out of 16 teams representing seven schools from across the state.
“Our morning didn’t go according to plan, but we persevered through irregular bite behavior and learning how to navigate a fishery that was new to us,” shared Bovee. “We love what we do, and no matter the final results, I always feel like I’m winning after spending a day on the water.”
Mid’s Laker Fishing Club is one of nearly 20 athletic teams and student organizations the College offers as part of the Laker Life experience.
“We’re proud to offer our students a wide range of opportunities for experiences outside the classroom,” shared Tammy Alvaro, Director of Student Life at Mid. “Through student organizations students learn leadership skills and expand their horizons, an important part of the college experience.”
