Our Certificate in Welding is focused on the skills welders need to succeed and takes 35 credits to complete. You can earn this Certificate in just 1-1½ years when attending full-time.

Welding Training Credential Pathway

Welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers use hand-held or remotely controlled equipment to join, repair, or cut metal parts and products. Mid offer a state-of-the-art welding lab on each of the main campuses with current technology and hands-on learning opportunities.

Common career tasks include studying blueprints, sketches, and specifications, calculating the dimensions of parts to be welded, inspecting structures or materials to be welded, igniting torches or starting power supplies, monitoring the welding process to avoid overheating, and maintaining equipment and machinery.

Welding (Pre-Apprentice) Pathway

Launch your journey toward a welding apprenticeship with Mid's Pre-Apprentice Certificate. With just 4 courses, you can complete this credential quickly, gain the skills you need to start an apprenticeship, and demonstrate to potential employers that you are ready to learn and contribute meaningfully to their team.

Welding Pre-Apprentice (CTE - Designed for High School Students)

This Welding Pre-Apprentice (CTE) Pathway is designed specifically for high school students. Students complete one course each semester and graduate high school able to start an apprenticeship and demonstrate to potential employers that they are ready to learn.

Industry-Recognized Certifications from respected organizations, like the American Welding Society, increases your employment potential by clearly demonstrating to employers the skills you have mastered.

You may be wondering how employers will know what skills you've mastered by completing your degree at Mid. To highlight these skills, Mid has partnered with a variety of organizations to award industry-recognized skill certifications. Industry-recognized certifications provide a return on your education investment through hands-on training using state of the art tools and equipment. These certifications are earned in addition to your Mid credential and increase your employment potential.

Welding Industry-Recognized Certifications

  • SENSE Level I
    • SENSE – Schools Excelling through National Skills Education – is a set of specifications and guidelines meant to assist schools in training welders. The program guidelines are based on a survey of the welding industry, and define two levels of knowledge and skills required in the welding workplace, Level I for entry level welders and Level II for advanced welders.
    • Trainees that complete a SENSE-compliant training program are eligible to receive an AWS SENSE certificate of completion and wallet card. The SENSE program includes four different certificates of completion that a trainee can earn, one for each welding process offered (SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, and FCAW).
    • Certification Content Includes:
      • Occupational orientation
      • Safety and health of welders
      • Drawing and welding symbol interpretation
      • Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)
      • Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW, FCA W-S)
      • Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCA W-G/GM, FCA W-S)
      • Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW)

NEW! Pre-Apprentice Certificates

Welding Pre-Apprenticeship Certificates are now available and allow you to build basic skills before entering an official apprenticeship at a local employer. The Pre-Apprentice Certificate Pathway can be customized for students ready to attend college and for those currently in high school.

Participate in Community Projects

Give back to local communities while gaining valuable skills! Mid's welding students contribute to local projects like the Mackinac Bridge scale model at the Clare MDOT Welcome Center, and the multiple mascot sculptures that now appear in Harrison and Gladwin, with Beaverton planned for the Fall 2020 semester.
